Upgrading Laptop Hard Drives

You can upgrade your laptop hard drive when it runs out of space. You can easily double or triple hard drive space with software that clones the old drive. Cloning makes a new drive into an exact replica of the old one.  Just swap it in and boot up to attach the new hard drive to the laptop. Here are a few pointers how best to upgrade:
  • Buy an upgrade kit that has a case for attaching new hard drives along with data transfer software.
  • Before starting data transfer clean up the old drive. Delete unwanted files, uninstall programs not used and defragment disk drive to avoid transferring data not required.
  • To transfer data, take the new drive and mount it carefully in the case.
  • Make sure the laptop is off. Attach the USB cable and attach the drive to the laptop. Put in the disk-cloning software and boot directly from the CD. Choose Automatic so that the software sets up the way the data will be copied.
  • It will ask you to specify which drive is new and which drive is old. Make sure you choose correctly, and then tell it to begin.
  • Make note the way partitions are laid out. Update partition manually. The software enlarges all partitions proportionally. Sit back once data transfer takes place.
  • Swap the hard drives. When done turn off the laptop. Unplug it and remove the battery. Look in user manual to carefully take out the old drive.
  • Locate hard drive cradle and remove it from the old drive to attach it to the new drive.
  • Take the new drive out of the case and put it in the laptop. Close up the laptop, reinsert the battery and the power cord, and restart the machine.
  • Your laptop has doubled or triple of hard drive space and you can the old drive as an instant external backup drive.
