Laptop Hard Drives – Internal & External

Hard drives are storage devices used by computers to save data on files and programs. Laptops come fitted with at least one internal hard drive containing user data and programs. Additional hard drives can also be installed in laptops to expand their capacity. This is where external hard drives come into play for use to increase data portability.

All computers have hard drives containing operating systems with installed programs and user files. External hard drives operate on the same principle with one difference they are portable and can be moved from one computer to another. Laptops are shipped with at least one internal hard drive.

External hard drives are useful for a variety of reasons. They increase portability allowing large amounts of data to be shared. Portable hard drives not integrated directly to computers make them ideal as backup media, even allowing offsite storage. The disadvantage is that most external hard drives are slower than internal ones.

The reason for this is the interface used, generally USB or Firewire. It is possible to convert an internal hard drive into an external one. A device called an "enclosure" is used to do this. The hard drive is placed within the enclosure, which provides power and a way to connect the hard drive to the computer.

The increase of digital photography and video has increased the use of external hard drives. A USB hard drive is now a common accessory to laptops. Since the interface makes an external drive slower, they are best used as supplementary storage to save user files including photos, music, videos and documents.

Consider upgrading your laptop hard drive externally but remember to read all the specifications prior to purchase. You must ensure to buy the best hard drive that fits your needs along with buying the correct one for your laptop.
